My bedtime routine is actually one of my most favorite parts of my day. Do I look forward to it the second I wake up? Yes, sometimes. Why? Well, mainly because I don’t want to get out of bed so then I can’t wait to get back into bed. But also because my routine has become something I have fine-tuned in order to have something to look forward to at the end of the day.
It is essential to have a well-thought-out bedtime routine to help wind down and set the tone for a restful night. A calming nightly regimen can ease your mind, rejuvenate your skin, and relax your muscles. Here’s a glimpse into my bedtime routine that brings tranquility and peace to the end of my day.
Step 1: Hang Outside with Annie
My routine starts at promptly 9pm. Do not laugh at me. I am old. But the beginning of my routine starts with sitting outside with Annie for 10-15 minutes. It’s one final time before bed for her to sniff around. It’s also one of my favorite times of day because I freaking love the stars and just sitting there, looking at them.
Step 2: Stretching
Next? It’s time for some stretching. Typically, I’ll just search TikTok or Pinterest for a quick, bedtime stretch routine. Not only does it improve flexibility, but it also promotes blood circulation and helps in preparing my body for a peaceful slumber.
Step 3: Shower
A shower works wonders in washing away the day’s exhaustion. The warm water soothes my muscles further and prepares my skin for the upcoming skincare regimen. It’s also a sort of mental cleanse, as it allows me to literally and figuratively wash away my worries. JK I just think about all my worries. But it does wash away the day’s gross.
Step 4: Skincare Routine
Post-shower, I indulge in my skincare routine. Cleansing, toning, serums, and moisturizing are my go-to steps. I pay special attention to nourish my skin, as nighttime is when it undergoes the most healing and regeneration. I was once told by someone in the skincare game that washing your face at night is crucial. Like, please don’t ever skip that. And then in the morning, you can just rinse with cold water before your morning skincare routine. I don’t know if this is real facts or not, but it’s what I’ve been doing for years and it’s worked for me.
Step 5: Dr. Teals Sleep Lotion
Here comes my secret weapon – Dr. Teals Sleep Lotion! Lavender is known for its calming properties. I swear by this after every nighttime shower.
Step 6: Adjusting the Room Temperature
Next, I turn down the AC to make sure the room is comfortably cool. A cooler bedroom is said to mimic the natural drop in our body’s temperature when we sleep, thus aiding in falling asleep more quickly.
Step 7: Dr. Teals Sleep Spray
Okay, next thing I can’t live without at night? Dr. Teals Sleep Spray. More lavender, I know, but it’s just the best. Just three spritz on my pillow and I’m dreaming of flowers.
Step 8: Switching Phone to Red Light Mode
It’s crucial to reduce exposure to blue light before bed, so I switch my phone to red light mode. This shift minimizes the disruptive effect of blue light on my sleep cycle and helps my brain to wind down. Not sure how? Check out this article!
Step 9: Delving into a Good Book
With everything else done, it’s time to read. Reading is the ideal way for me to escape the real world for a bit and immerse myself in a different universe. It’s also a perfect tool to get my eyes tired and ready for sleep. Right now I’m reading A Court of Mist and Fury!
Step 10: Lights Out
With my mind and body both calm and relaxed, it’s finally time to hit the bed. As I close my eyes, I say good night to Annie and Stanley, say a prayer, and drift away. Most of the time. And I’ll tell you my top secret….melatonin.
Incorporating a bedtime routine that soothes the mind, body, and soul can profoundly impact the quality of your sleep and, consequently, your overall well-being. So, find what works for you and make your nights as enriching as your days.
